Chapter 01

What odor, salt and spills do to leather and carpet

An interior ages from the inside of the material. Body oils and sunscreen work into leather and darken it. Winter salt tracked in on boots dries white in the carpet and wicks back up every time the floor gets damp. A coffee that went into a seat seam stays in the foam under the cover, and that is where a smell comes from long after the surface looks clean.

Dust and skin cells settle into the headliner and the dash vents, and sunlight bakes them into the plastics. A wipe-down makes the top layer look better and leaves everything underneath where it was. Doing it properly means getting to the layer that holds the problem.

Vacuum, steam, extract, condition, then the corners

The work at Performance Plus starts dry. Commercial grade vacuums pull the loose soil out of the carpet, seat rails and seams first, because wetting dirt only turns it into mud. Then comes the equipment the shop outfitted itself with after the move to its 3,000 sq ft bay in 2013: steam cleaners and steam extractors. Steam loosens what is stuck in upholstery and plastics, and the extractor lifts it back out with the water instead of leaving it in the foam.

Leather is cleaned and then conditioned, in that order, so the conditioner goes onto clean material instead of sealing the grime in. The dashboard and panels are cleaned by hand, window glass is done last so it is not smeared by everything above it, and odor removal is worked at the source, which is the seat, the carpet or the headliner, not just the air.

Then the places a customer notices on the second day: the headliner, which needs a gentle hand because the glue behind it is easy to stain, and the door jambs, where dirt collects at every entry and exit. Because we do not sell packages, you choose any or all of these after the free in-person consultation.

Chapter 03

Keeping it after the car leaves

Most of what keeps an interior good is habit. Rubber or fabric mats that can be pulled out and hosed, a leather conditioner on a regular schedule so the finish does not dry and crack, and a quick vacuum before dirt gets ground in. None of it is complicated. It just works better when the car starts from clean.

The inside pairs naturally with the outside of the car: an exterior detail with a hand wash and sealant, and for the right car, window tint to cut UV, heat and glare on the very leather we just conditioned. A car headed for a listing can go through auction management as well.
